Interview
with Rich from Behind the Sun by Jen
First
off, can you tell me about the band, how it started, how long have you
been playing together, etc?
John and I were in a
band called N.O.C. and it came to an end in 2000, so we contacted Alex
who hadn't really gotten into anything since Burnside broke up, and picked
up John's brother Frank for a drummer... We've been playing together ever
since.
I
have both albums Broken Hearts and Shattered Bones and also Targeting
My Greatest Weakness, which both kicks ass! Which was your favorite to
release and musically, which one do you think is your best work?
Thanks a lot....Broken hearts was our best album musically...But it was
really experimental. On the new album we're working on, Blood covered
love letters, we have nailed down the direction we want to go in and it
has been the most fun, yet the most frustratingly slow album so far...
What
is the difference between both of the releases, in your opinion?
On targeting we just did what we already knew...we came from hardcore
and metal bands so that's what we wrote... Broken hearts we experimented
with different influences and did whatever we felt like playing...Some
of the music we're not so happy with now, but what the fuck...We don't
feel like sticking to the mold of what's hot right now...We play what
we want.
Now,
I read you are currently recording a new album...Tell me about that and
how that is going?
Yeah, we're working on
a new album and are currently putting the finishing touches on the guitar
work, and the last of the vocals... The album is the best music I've been
a part of and we are all really excited about it. It's going slowly, but
I'll get into that next.
It
is taking a long time, how come? Are you running into any problems or
just taking your time to make a perfect album?
Our engineer in this album is the same extremely talented person who recorded
our last release...Dan Korneff...Unfortunately on top of being very talented
he is also insanely busy... Dan has worked on several albums over the
last year while our recording has been going on..Including Candiria's
newest release, the upcoming E-Town Concrete release, 40 below summer,
Breaking Benjamin, Ill nino and several others.... So instead of rushing
through this, we have been recording around Dan's schedule to make this
album as good as we can... On top of all of this we added in an additional
guitarist to our line up, in the middle of this recording and had to take
some time to re write some songs...
You
also haven't been playing many shows recently, is this because recording
has taken first priority?
No we just hate playing shows...Fuck it we're done with that...We're gonna
start doing all of our shows live via satellite for all the world to see,
complete with barbed wire wrapped, flaming baseball bats and naked cage
dancers... And recording is priority.
Who
are some of your favorite bands to play with?
We really don't care
who we play with...It's the kids that show up that make a difference...I
mean we have a lot of bands that we are friends with and shit, but that
really doesn't make the show any better...We've had great shows playing
with bands that we hated.
Worse
and best experience at a show, and i want dirt!
Christ there are too many bad shows to list... And without being there
it's hard to explain....we played a show in Arizona with anal cunt and
some shitty band that fuckin blew so bad it made me sick... I thought
it would be a great show with anal cunt and all, but it only got worse
as the night went on... Everything from drunk old whores to a trombone
toting asshole that fronted one of the other bands that I wanted to stab
to death.... Good shows....Every show we've played with Irate has been
awesome...Every show we play down in chucktown S.C. with our boys the
F.O.C.... We played this show in Atlanta that looked like a complete wash....
But one of the other bands was a Philly band that was a bunch of really
cool guys, that fucking danced naked and set the whole place off... Really
weird scene, but awesome all the same.
In
my review of you guys, I compared you to Lamb of God and the Haunted.
Do you agree or disagree with that and why?
Sounds good to me ...I'd rather sound like no one else, but if we're going
to be compared to anyone I guess they're as good as any. I was thinking
like a mix of Barry Manalow and Cannibal Corpse...
What
kind of influences does the band have? What are some of your favorite
bands now?
We all have different influences that range from old school metallica,
iron maiden, slayer, pantera, and exodus...to candiria, biohazard, and
Dying fetus.... We also have some hip hop influences like Nas, The roots
and other shit like that and a lot of emo...saves the day, lifetime, reggie
and the full effect, like I said all kinds of shit...We don't really follow
the band of the month club.
Anything
else you want to add?
Our album will be done in a moth or so...We're not set on a label yet,
but when it comes out buy 100 copies. And look out for "Broken Neck"
the most brutal tough guy band in the world! Thanks a lot Jen for keeping
this site going...Without people like you running shit...There wouldn't
be much of a scene.
