Interview with Burt Wolf of Beowolf Productions by Jen

Boy oh boy, I don’t know where to start with this. First off, how did you first get started in the underground scene? What was the first Beowolf project?
I first got started in the underground scene back in 1990. I was helping roadie and manage my friends band Deathcore. I met a lot of people and started helping them out as well. I started booking shows for bands and created Black Beowolf Management with my friend at the time Scott Black. I also started selling the bands merchandise for them and created my own distro label. Things feel apart with Scott and I, so I dropped the “Black” from the company name and continued on with just Beowolf. Once my band “Family of Freaks” started, (You might remember that band, Jen), I stopped managing other bands and just focused on my band and distro! The 1st Beowolf project was the release of my bands demo! I then started doing compilations for my distro label.
In the very beginning before the band was even around, who were some of the band you were in contact with?
The 1st band I ever wrote to and got a demo was the band Cataclysm. Some other bands I was in contact with were Angelkill, Astaroth, Internal Bleeding, Mortal Decay, Hemdale, Corpse Vomit, Lividity and a few more!
Next came the band, Family of Freaks. Overall, how did you enjoy that experience?
For the most part, I loved the whole band experience. I had so many more good times than bad. I got to play shows, with a bunch of cool bands, met a lot of cool people and had a lot of fun! I think about those days a lot and miss it! I would love to have a band like Family of Freaks again.
You were the singer in the band, where did you come up with your lyrics. You touched on some pretty heavy topics, including the “Fart Game” and “Morning Wood” (which was never released!).
I wrote some of my lyrics from the things I saw going on in the world around me. Some lyrics were inspired by movies I’m into. Those two songs you mentioned were just for fun and were written in the early days of the band when we were called Side Show Freaks. The Fart Game made it to the F.O.F. days though “Morning Wood” was only played live! I actually grew to dislike both those songs! (Me too, except “Morning Wood” still makes me giggle when I think about it!-Jen)
What was your favorite song to play with the band?
My favorite song that we use to play was “Satan’s Candy Basket”. I loved everything about it, from the lyrics, music, song structure and of course the crowds response every time we played it live. I also love the song “Army of Darkness” as well. I loved the last song we were working on called “Parade of Deformity” about the life in side shows! Unfortunately, it was never recorded and released. (I loved S.C.B. too, but that double bass tired the fuck out of me!- Jen)
Did you play in any other bands after that?
I never played in any other bands after F.O.F., but I have always wanted to start another band.
You have a distro label. How is that going for you right now? How many bands are involved in that?
Beowolf Productions is going better than ever. Since I started the web site at the end of 2002, the distro is doing better than ever. I’ve made a lot of new contacts, just because of the site! I’ve helped promote and disturbed products for over 500 bands now. Next year, October 2004, will be the 10th anniversary of the label!
If a band wanted to send you stuff for it, give us the details how it works?
Well, all they have to do is send me a copy to check out. If I like what I hear, and the people are cool to me, I’d be more than happy to carry it!
Are there only bands on the label, or do you take zines, and other merchandise?
I most carry releases from bands on my label, but I do have a decent amount of zines I carry as well. I’m hoping to start carrying T-shirts soon!!!
Are you still printing the zine Treats from the Underground, or is it strictly a web site now?
Well, the last issue that was printed was issue #6 back almost 2 years ago. I got way behind after I bought my house and was struggling to keep putting out the zine. After the 9-11-01 attack, I was laid off from my job and in no way could still do the print version of the zine. This is when I started the web site. It has proven to be a good direction so far. Once I get caught up with reviews and finances, there may be another print version.
How many issues of print did you put out?
I put out a total of 6 issues of the magazine. Four were under the original name of Satan’s Candy Basket and the last 2 were under the name Treats from the Underground.
What were some of the bands you got to interview?
I’ve interviewed a lot of cool bands over all the years. Some of the bands included GWAR (twice), Godflesh, SOD, Skinlab, Fear Factory, Spineshank, Biohazard, Slipknot, Meshuggah, Hypocrisy, Indecision, Candiria, Nasum, Nile, Sepultura, Fleshgrind, Cannibal Corpse, Powerman 5000, Internal Bleeding and many more!
How is the site coming? How many hits do you get from it? What is the reaction to most people who see it?
The site is doing really well. It’s been a real good improvement to my label. It’s helped out a lot. I’ve gotten in contact with a lot of new people because of the site. I’ve gotten a lot of hits for the site, but I’m not quite sure how many. I’ve had my counters crash 2 or 3 times since I’ve started the site! Most people really like the site, that see it. It’s not fully where I want it to be, but it’s headed that way!

If someone wants to submit a CD for review, how would they go about it?

All they have to do it send it to the address below. I’m into all forms of extreme music, but I do review everything that is sent my way. So send in everything you got!
What are some of your favorite bands right now?
My two favorite bands right now are GWAR and Insane Clown Posse! I’ve also been listening to System of a Down, Mudvayne, Damnable, Fall Silent, Anthrax, Slayer, Slipknot, SOD, Insolence, Kottenmouth Kinds, Powerman 5000, etc…etc…A lot lately!
Is GWAR still your all time favorite band?

Yes! Yes! Yes! I still have my GWAR license plate on my car! I’ve seen them live every time they come to Philly since “Scumdogs of the Universe” except for the past album. I couldn’t go cause of my new job. I work 2nd shift and couldn’t afford to loose a days pay!

What is in store for the future of Beowolf Productions?
Right now, I’m trying to just improve on the web site. I have a bunch of photos and descriptions on all of my releases on my label. I’m still updating the site with those everyday. I’m also hoping to put song clips on there soon. I’m trying to get caught up on my many music reviews I’ve got to do. I might eventually start doing CD compilations again. That’s about all for now!
Any final words?
First off I’d like to say thanx to you Jen for this interview and all the support over the years. Thanx also for all the good times when we were in Family of Freaks together (I miss those times a lot) (Me too Burt! –Jen) Thanx for being such a good friends over the years as well. Everyone feel free to send stuff my way for review on my site and possible distribution on my label. All people interested in trading, send your list and you’ll get mine! Support the Underground!
