Update: These guys are now called Malicious Disorder. They are searching for a drummer. They also played a show in October, which I'm sure kicked ass.
2005 Update: Malice has a new album out, Caucasian Psychosis. Currently
on their web site, if you buy two products, you'll either get their new
CD or Metalica's New DVD "Dark Souls" for free!
Interview
with Chad from Malice420 by Jen
Personally,
I wouldn't consider you guys to have the "cookie cutter" death
metal vocals. How would you describe the way the vocals sound?
I think death metal vocals are more deep with more grumble. I think you
could classify us as more thrash metal than anything and try to deliver
my vocals in the same manner.
In some parts, your music reminds me more of
black metal, not for the speed, but for the melodic harmonies. Would you
agree with that statement?
While we all enjoy various black metal bands we don't necessarily try
to implement that into our music. With that said, you can hear some influences
from the melodic styles of black metal.
Give us some Malice 420 history.
Malice 420 started as 4 drunken marines, who had played other bands prior
to enlisting, decided to get together and piss off some neighbors. It
started as a way to pass the time but began to come together pretty well.
We parted ways with our original guitar player and picked up Rob soon
after. We managed to play hundreds of shows around southern California
and record our first full length album when we decided to try our luck
on the east coast. We packed up our shit and got in a moving van and headed
east but had to leave our drummer in Missouri to be a father. We struggled
to find a replacement until Dan moved out from Cali in March of 2004.
We have been playing the east coast and other states for the past 5 months
and are starting to build up a following.
420= pot…are you guys big smokers of the
wacky tabacky?
Damn skippy. Also outspoken advocates for the reform of marijuana laws.
Tell us about your cd, 'Hateful Preachings’.
It was our first full length and I think it went pretty well aside from
the fact that we are independent and we had a small budget. The new album
is currently under construction and due to be out by the new year. We
will be releasing the single "The Opportunist" In October and
I think this album will show how much we have grown since the first one.
The style is the same but our abilities as musicians and song-writers
have definitely grown.
How do you think it differs from material done
in the past?
This is our first release together but our prior experiences differ a
bit.
Any luck with labels? Interested in any in particular?
Their has been a little talking going on. That's about all I will say
for now but if you check with me in 6 months I think you will find me
much more informative on that topic.
Who are some influences of the band?
We all grew up on stuff like, Slayer, Megadeath, Metallica, Pantera. You
know, the metal greats of our lifetime. We hate were this new-metal shit
is going so we have vowed to keep it a little closer to the real deal
by not jumping on that gay ass bandwagon.
Do you guys get to play a lot of shows? How is
the scene where you are?
Yeah we are playing a lot lately but their can always be more. The seen
here isn't all that great as far as good venues but there are definitely
some hardcore metal heads here and we have met some incredible bands here
as well.
Who
is your favorite band to play with?
Any least favorite?
We always dig playing with "Fearingmind"(http://www.fearingmindmetal.com)
and "Sufferchannel". Yeah there is a few bands we didn't like
playing out with but we don't play the shit talking game so we will leave
it at that.
Is there anything you guys do right before a
show to get pumped up?
A bong load, a heineken, and a shot of Jagermeister. That usually does
the trick.
