STEVE VAI Musicians Institute awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree to legendary rock guitarist, recording artist, producer, and composer Steve Vai. The award was officially conferred during MI’s summer graduation ceremony held on September 18 at LA’s Wiltern Theatre. After first achieving prominence as guitarist for the late Frank Zappa, Vai has gone on to win multiple Grammys, repeatedly top critics’ and readers’ polls, and earn gold and platinum records while becoming the personification of contemporary guitar virtuosity. HALLOWEEN II Following the success of Rob Zombie’s initial reinvention of John Carpenter’s smash cult horror film HALLOWEEN which premiered number one at the box office breaking all Labor Day Weekend 2007 records, comes the sequel, HALLOWEEN II, hitting theatres nationwide on August 28, 2009 from Dimension Films. With the enormously popular horror movie series back, writer-producer-director Rob Zombie, once again puts his own twisted twist on the soundtrack. Halloween II – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Hip-O/UMe), released August 25, 2009, and co-produced by Zombie, manages to bring together dialogue from the film as well as music from Motorhead, The Moody Blues, Scream (sans future member Dave Grohl), Rod Stewart, the MC5 and Foghat, alongside new psychobilly band Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures. Frightmaster Zombie helmed 2007’s ninth installment in the HALLOWEEN franchise that began in 1978. HALLOWEEN II, which debuts August 28, picks up where HALLOWEEN left off, and focuses on the struggles of Laurie Strode (played by Scout Taylor-Compton) and killer Michael Myers (played by Tyler Mane). The new recordings on Halloween II – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack include “Transylvania Terror Train” and “Honky Tonk Halloween” from Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures, who appear in the film. The band’s leader, Jesse Dayton, an Austin, Texas-based singer-guitarist who has played with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, was part of the duo Banjo & Sullivan that performed in Zombie’s 2005 flick The Devil’s Rejects and simultaneously released an album. Similarly, Rob Zombie Presents Captain Clegg And The Night Creatures (Stag/Zombie A Go Go) will be issued August 28. Also new are “Laurie’s Theme” from John 5 produced by Bob Marlette, (Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne); “Nurse Killa” from score composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Halloween, The Devil’s Rejects); and a cover of Nazareth’s 1976 hit “Love Hurts” from singer Nan Vernon, who covered “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” and “Mr. Sandman” for HALLOWEEN. The classic tracks range from The Moody Blues’ 1966 psychedelic gem “Nights In White Satin” and 10cc’s cheery 1977 hit “The Things We Do For Love” to Rod Stewart’s 1972 cover of The Temptations’ “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” Foghat’s 1972 take on Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and the MC5 proto-punk masterpiece “Kick Out The Jams,” which was recorded live in Detroit on Devil’s Night/Halloween 1968. CARL VERHEYEN Carl Verheyen is releasing his new rock masterpiece on September 25 on Cranktone Entertainment. Trading 8s is Verheyen’s tenth studio album to date and is an impressive musical collection that showcases his endless talents. GUILT MACHINE Arjen Lucassen creates the new prog rock project GUILT MACHINE. The band releases ON THIS PERFECT DAY September 29th on Mascot Records USA. The album will be released in three formats. Regular Edition of CD in jewel case, Special edition of CD/DVD Digipak and a limited edition CD/DVD Digibook. "In my view this is my best side project so far," explains Lucassen. "It comes completely from the heart, for it was written and recorded during a new inspiring phase in my life after my heavy depression. This, being an entirely new project, there were no expectations whatsoever, which enabled me to just let my inspiration guide me without any (outside) pressure." As AYREON fans have come to expect from Arjen, the music of GUILT MACHINE ranges from dark and heavy to atmospheric and melancholic. It's also no secret that I've always been a big fan of her melodic guitar style, so she also plays all the guitar solos on this album." Despite these differences, GUILT MACHINE still has much in common with AYREON. JIM DAVIES Jim Davies, the man who gave The Prodigy’s biggest hits a guitar-shaped boot up the electronic arse, is set to launch his debut instrumental guitar album on Mascot Records. ELECTRONIC GUITAR is a pulsating monster of a record, showcasing Davies’ ingenious guitar techniques that blur the line between synths and six-strings. ELECTRONIC GUITAR is Davies’ debut album as an instrumental artist. It’s a powerful statement of intent from the revered pioneer that should appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike… “My mission statement was to push the boundaries of the guitar instrumental album,” says Jim, “I saw little point in trying to emulate the kind of virtuoso, highly technical albums of Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani. They’ve got that side of the genre well and truly covered! As far as bona fide guitar heroes go, Jim Davies was a late starter. The veteran of the UK electronic-rock crossover scene began playing at 16. However, his delayed introduction to the instrument was no handicap: three years after his first power-chord, he was a finalist in Guitarist magazine’s Guitarist of The Year competition. Davies earned his place in the final with an instrumental that demonstrated his unique sound, developed while still in his teens. In 1995, a chance meeting with Prodigy main man Liam Howlett gave Jim the opportunity to take his innovative playing to a wider audience. Seizing the moment, Davies handed Howlett a demo tape. Liam was so impressed by what he heard, he asked Jim to join him as Prodigy’s touring guitarist. The subsequent tour took in The Prodigy’s famous Glastonbury appearance of 1995 and headline slots at festivals across the globe. “The dance scene became a massive source of inspiration for me at a time when I felt I’d taken my rock style playing as far as it could go,” says Davies. “I loved all the squelchy filter sounds and layers of synth lines, so I started using more guitar effects to try and emulate those sounds.” “The plan was to incorporate my love of electronic music into the world of the guitar instrumental. It was important to me that I did this album in my own style. I’ve always been into effects and creating un-guitar like sounds, so this is an electronic-based guitar album using nothing but the guitar itself to create the more ‘techno’-like sounds. ANDREAS KISSER Beloved guitar shredder Andreas Kisser of the legendary Brazilian metal band Sepultura releases his first solo project HUBRIS I&II on Mascot Records. This double album project will only be available as an import online or on iTunes as a download. Since the release of “Roots” (1996) and the consecration of Sepultura, the world was introduced to a new form of metal guitar playing. Mixing blinding riffs, strong pounding rhythms, and clear & expressive tones, Andreas Kisser had created something very new. We named this style, ‘root guitar’, and it found its way around the world, having a transforming influence on much of the 90’s metal scene. It’s style & technique can be seen in what is now called ‘New Metal’ (or Nu Metal). Just to clarify, Andreas Kisser is happy in Sepultura, with the same intensity and passion as always and has no intentions of leaving the band. However, he felt it was time to expand his horizons & the different challenges that lay in front of him. His first solo album release is called, “HUBRIS I & II”. Going beyond the usual ‘noise’, the album demonstrates influence of metal, musical education & disciplines, MPB (Brazilian popular music) and even “repente” (a form of improvisation, a style of music born in the streets of the Brazilian Northeast region). & all the while doing this without losing what is truly important: its musical identity. There are 21 tracks divided into two volumes: a heavy side & the other less intense. The majority of the well-guarded ideas come from demons. “After Max Cavalera left Sepultura, I started to compose melodies while never reaching a completed song.” explains the Brazilian guitarist. HUBRIS I & II is a finalization of what I have written since 1997.” Despite this obvious contrast, the album as a whole has consistency & unity. HUBRIS I: Here we have an interesting collaboration of tuning between guitar, bas & drums. The sound carries the ‘root’ feeling so familiar in his sound, its intensity only comparable to a high voltage shock. IN respect to the compositions, from the start there are varied surprises. From the introduction of the Brazilian ten string acoustic guitar called, “viola caipira” alongside the electric guitar and then quickly letting the listener know what is to come. And that is exactly what happens, as told by the guitarist: “This is a guitar record with an emphasis on tones. Although there are some solos, I preferred to work on the ambiances, almost as if I was doing a soundtrack for a movie.” HUBRIS II: In general HUBRIS II keeps the nuances a little a little more daring. This will probably be the record that will surprise the public more accustomed to Sepultura. A fair part of the songs is instrumental, in which the big connection between them is the acoustic guitar as the protagonist. Yet Andreas advises: “This isn’t strictly an ‘unplugged’ record, with just acoustic elements. It has electric guitars, of course!” Who would think that Andreas could resist the temptation? HUBRIS I & II brings to us the Andreas Kisser, exposed: the multiple sides as a musician, composer, arranger and producer. We can see all the various facets of this great guitarist, who has taught us where the root guitar comes from, as well as its origins and more importantly, what it spawned from Sepultura. You can hear many styles from an R&B/Hip Hop vibe to one that is heavy but has an indian vibe with lots of exotic percussion. I even have a couple tunes with techno elements, some funk, some blues and some bepop. Hell, there is even some motorcycles on it and I even played slide guitar on "Jigsaw" which is fairly new for me. ARKAEA ARKAEA, featuring members Raymond Herrera and Christian Olde Wolbers of Fear Factory and Threat Signal, have just finished their debut album YEARS IN THE DARKNESS. The album is set to be released on July 14, 2009 on E1 Music, formerly KOCH Records. YEARS IN THE DARKNESS was produced by Christian Olde Wolbers and ARKAEA and mixed by legendary Producer Terry Date, best known for his work with the Deftones, Slipknot, White Zombie, Soundgarden and Pantera. SWEET CYANIDE New York’s post-hardcore outfit SWEET CYANIDE will kick-off the summer with the release of their self-titled debut CD, Sweet Cyanide on July 7th on Break Down Lane Music. SWEET CYANIDE has a knack for blending the energy of more abrasive bands with great pop hooks, spiked with hair-raising guitar solos. The first single aptly titled Crash Theory will hit airwaves late August in time for the band to announce tour dates. “Crash Theory was written about a person who purposely destroys the relationships around themselves just to thrive on the feeling of loneliness and the high of putting it back together,” explains singer Sal Scoca. SWEET CYANIDE is comprised of four individualistic, yet united stimulation junkies. “All four of us are literally insane—but each in a totally different way,” laughs Angelo Fariello. THIRD EYE BLIND Tony Fredianelli from the bank Third Eye Blind is working on a solo project to be released later in 2009. “Before I joined 3EB I was a solo artist. I started playing at 14 and really excelled at guitar. I want to go back to my roots and create some of that shredding guitar that started my career.” At 16 Fredianelli was teaching guitar and caught the eye of famed guitar shred aficionado Mike Varney, owner and president of Shrapnel Records. After listening to a demo tape Varney signed Fredianelli to Shrapnel Records. He formed the speed metal neo-classical band Apocrypha releasing 3 records. Marty Friedman (former Megadeth ax-slinger) produced the first two albums and the third Fredianelli produced himself. In late 1992 Varney introduced Fredianelli to the then unknown singer, Stephan Jenkins and was asked to join the band Third Eye Blind. History was made. MARKY RAMONE Things got way out of control after last Saturday night’s show in Mexico. The van shuttling the band back to the hotel was besieged by fans. While attempting to protect the band, a member of the touring party was injured. The security at the venue did their best, but was overwhelmed by the numbers of people and intensity of the situation. They never had to deal with anything like this before. When attempting to leave the venue, fans rushed toward Marky Ramone and band. Surrounded by overzealous fans pounding on the windows of the band's vehicle, the fans eventually cracked the windshield. One fan was thrown into on-coming traffic trying to cling to the side of the moving van. He was not injured. A few moments later he and a friend were spotted in a taxi that caught up to the van, shouting and waving at their hero. If anyone saw the DVD "RAW" when the band was besieged by fans in Argentina? Picture that, but much worse. It was a life threatening situation. Sunday's show was to be in a larger venue, with the same amount of security. In the interests of everyone's safety and well being, it has been decided that Sunday's show in Mexico City will not go forward. Marky apologies to all his fans in Mexico City and says he's really enjoyed everything about the shows and wants to make sure no one gets hurt moving forward. An excerpt from the chat is below: YOU ALL CAME FROM DIFFERENT BACK GROUNDS. WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING THAT BROUGHT YOU TOGETHER? The music. We started out as business partners, which is ass backwards for most bands. We didn’t know each other, we weren’t friends, all in all I had no idea who these guys were. But daily we become family, I mean I love these guys, they are great musicians and killer people. FIVE FINGER DECIDED TO KICK IT OLD SCHOOL WITH THE HEAVY METAL GENRE, GUITAR SOLOS, AND HEAVY VOCALS AND EVERYTHING. BUT YOU ALSO HAVE A LITTLE TWIST OF NEW SCHOOL. SO WHY DO IT THAT WAY? Because, to be one sided. To be a blank piece of paper and just not into it, and so much music has been done already and I appreciate things like grunge and punk rock and I love SLIPKNOT, KORN, and bands like that. For me not to enter the kinds of music I prefer into what they listen to. I mean Zol came from Hungry, so he’s got a European style, he’s really into black metal and what not. Jeremy listens to anything from DAVID BOWEY to Prince, every band you can imagine, Jeremy has listened to and he is an encyclopedia of music facts. Matt is AC/DC, ZZ TOP guy, Midwest kinda. An excerpt from the review is below: “Now to what the huge crowd was waiting for all night. 15 minutes before BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE took the stage a chant of exciting crowd members started and was so loud and didn’t stop for a few minutes. While this all was happening I reflected on my last show with the Wales men and how I barely got to see the show cause I was actually helping the band do merch so tonight I was going to be able to really see what I was listening to that night. Finally the lights dimmed and the classic AC/DC YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG came on and I guess the crowd was still amped on their chanting BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE’s name they just continued to sing along with this song. So the boys take the stage and blast right into SCREAM, AIM, FIRE, Got to love the energy of this song to open up the night. They guys were on target tonight lots of energy and just from the crowds reaction you could see the guys were feeding off of that. Next up they played EYE OF THE STORM. WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS? It’s just easier like with other drummers I have to explain things and do out counts for them. So when Iggor and I play we just do it we know. We play at a speed where its our own speed and tempo so those are very unique things that I don’t find with anyone else. Even after the 10 years we got back together and everything is exactly the same. Musically it was the same we went right into it. The ten years didn’t matter musically the minute we worked together again it just clicked. ON THE INFLIKTED CD PEOPLE HAD EXPECTATIONS ON HEARING THAT SEPULTURA SOUND. WHEN YOU DID WRITE THIS ALBUM WERE YOU LOOKING TO MAKE SOMETHING NEW? We didn’t even think about the past. I just made the album as raw and natural as possible. I didn’t sit down and discuss what kind of vibe this album would have. People would say I like it because it’s raw and aggressive and it’s got a cool thrash vibe with a groove. I’m glad they like it like that but we didn’t try to do it like that it just happen to come out like that and I think its cooler and more natural. We usually go in as a group and we have our own ideas that we bring in with us. Like with VENOM our guitar player had some riffs and I would have something and he would be like yea I don’t know what to put here and I would help him in that aspect. Then once the whole album is written musically then I can start over and write again lyrically. I never write lyrics, I always have ideas of subject matter and things that effect me on a daily basis and I usually don’t have to write them down because its something that is effecting me that I won’t forget. But I never write lyrics without having songs first. I might start some vocal patterns and establish what kinds of words belong where, what kind of vowel sounds and then it evolves from there. An excerpt from the chat is below: HOW MUCH EMPHASIS DOES TYPE O NEGATIVE PUT ON THEIR VIDEOS? We used to put a big emphasis on it but now there is no real media to push it on. You spend 100,000 to make a video which is expensive these days and it gets spun twice on Head bangers ball, and that’s it and then you might get some local or cable stations, its really not a big promotional tool anymore especially for our bands. Best video we made we made in Serbia because it’s so damn cheap to shoot over there. We were already in Europe and they flew us there and it was a wild place. It was so war torn, there were holes blown into sides of buildings. You were able to buy a grenade on the street for a 100 euros (laughing) SO DO YOU HAVE ONE NOW? HAHAHA, No I didn’t get hooked up with the gypsies while I was over there. DO YOU THINK LABELS STILL PUSH FOR THE MIGHTY VIDEO? Yea I think so, if you are a certain artist like Mariah Carey you can spend half a million on a video but for rock bands, I think if you look at heavy bands or like head bangers ball now its guys making videos in garages, its horrible but that is what the standard has been lowered too. HATEBREED THE DAILY ROCK recently conducted an interview with HATEBREED guitarist Frank Novinec who spoke about the band’s upcoming live DVD, switching to Koch Records, his clothing line and his personal goals as well as the band’s goals in the coming years. An excerpt from the chat is below: BEING ON KOCH RECORDS NOW, WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING WITH THEM? For the next three releases that we have coming up from now and the end of the year. ANY REASON WHY YOU WOULD CHOOSE THEM? They are starting to dabble in the metal scene because before they were more of a hip hop thing, but we are all fans of the hip hop. We are just excited to work with them because they are good people and it serves the purpose real well for what we will be releasing this year. The first thing coming out is a live DVD, it was shot in Detroit about a month and a half ago, a live CD is also coming which is going to have a VERY special guest producer that I can’t name right now, but we are recording at Dallas and that might give you a little hint on who it might be. And lastly we have a cover CD coming out as well and all this will be coming to you before the end of the year. With all this happening it is also given us time to write a new record. DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN Stephanie Stevens (Romperchic) had the chance to do some Q&A with guitarist Jeff Tuttle of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN recently on behalf of The Daily Rock. Jeff talked about how he became part of the band, his background, and the band’s latest release “Ire Works”. Here are a few excerpts: GIVE ME A SHORT BACKGROUND ON YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU THINK YOU BROUGHT INTO THE BAND TO PUSH THEM TO THE NEXT LEVEL? I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years and have played in many bands back in Detroit . Capture the Flag, and Heads Will Roll being the most notable. As far as pushing the band to the next level goes I would have to say that a band like Dillinger is already at the top of their game. I’m not sure that I have pushed them further yet, but I will say, is that coming from more of a rock background I bring a different vibe to the stage. WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE LEARN FROM YOUR MUSIC AND AS PEOPLE? I hope that they learn to tolerate and appreciate many different forms of music. Just because you listen to metal doesn’t mean that you can’t listen to hip hop, or country or, whatever you want. There is a lot of music out there and it’s a shame not to give it all a chance. EXODUS High quality live audio of San Francisco Bay Area thrash legends EXODUS performing 'Children Of A Worthless God' recorded live during their recent tour stop at The House Of Blues in Chicago IL is available for streaming at The Daily Rock. The track appears on the album 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A' which was released by EXODUS in 2007 via Nuclear Blast Records. EXODUS is currently putting together a DVD containing the band's 2008 performance at Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, plus a 90-minute documentary as well as about 30 minutes of bonus footage, and all of the group's promotional music videos. SOILWORK The Daily Rock conducted an interview recently with SOILWORK vocalist Peter Wichers before their show at The Penny Arade in Rochester NY . An excerpt from the chat is below: SWORN TO A GREAT DIVIDE IS THE BAND’S SEVENTH FULL LENGTH ALBUM, AND BESIDES LINE-UP CHANGES, HOW HAS THE BAND EVOLVED SINCE STEELBATH SUICIDE? Wow. Yeah, like you said there’s been a lot of line up changes. Musically, I think that Soilwork tries to do something new every time, but not entirely reinvent themselves. God, um, that’s a tough one! I think maturity-wise, song writing, performance and stuff it’s all kind of come together over the years. And I feel that Soilwork now is a tighter band and everyone plays well together. Not that we didn’t do it before, but it has a lot to do with routine, I think. The more shows you do, the more records you do the better you get. It’s what you do, ya know? PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Exactly! But I wouldn’t say we’re perfect, but it’s probably the best it’s been. OK, SO YOU’RE SAYING THIS ALBUM IS THE BEST? Well, I actually did not participate on Sworn To A Great Divide. Fjerstad, bass] quit this past weekend. I won't go into the whole 'behind-the-music-band-break-up' scenario, but it was a night filled with retarded actions and words. The rest of us don't want to go through yet another major lineup change and really are just ready for a new chapter in our lives. Formed in 1999, DEAD TO FALL draws influences from Swedish metal, hardcore, death metal, and other genres, but is usually labeled a metalcore band. The band's first two albums have reached combined sales of 60,000 copies in the U.S. alone (according to publicity material released through Victory Records). The show was filmed late last year and features the band’s old lineup. THE SHOWDOWN recently parted ways with AJ Barrette (drums; ex-STILL REMAINS) and Eric Koruschak (bass). According to the band, "Eric and AJ decided that they wanted to spend more time with their families and other responsibilities at home, so they will not be touring with us anymore. They are great musicians and even better dudes and we'll miss them, but we feel like this band still has some things to say so we're gonna keep on keeping on!" Says the band: "These dudes are in it for the long haul and we could not be any more excited to be playing music with them. Yogi has been on the road for a long time but most of you probably recognize him as the drummer for DEMON HUNTER. Jeremiah is in a metal band from Nashville called DESTROY DESTROY DESTROY, he also engineered 'A Chorus Of Obliteration' [2004] and co-produced 'Back Breaker' [2008]. "And last, we're already in the process of writing a record with these dudes and it's looking like its gonna be heavier than ever! "New Life Behind Closed Eyes", the new album from UNHOLY, was released on May 12 via Prosthetic Records. The follow-up to 2007's "Blood of the Medusa" (Lambgoat Records) was recorded at Syracuse 's Moresound Studios (ED GEIN) and sees new vocalist Billy Price paint a scathing portrait of mankind's failures and shortcomings. The album's concept, written by Jonathan Dennison, revolves around an end-time narrative of the final days of humanity delivered by its own hand. Richly detailed artwork furthers the album's unsettling mood, but ultimately, it's the music within — a very heavy take on the northeastern metal sound, with strong riffs, intense vocals and sharp soloing — that makes UNHOLY impossible to ignore.in Kettering and guitars, bass and vocals were done at Foel Studios in Wales. "To The Death" was released on May 5 via Century Media Records (April 20 in Europe ). The self-produced CD was recorded at Castle Recording Studios in Utica , New York and was mixed by Tue Madsen (HEAVEN SHALL BURN, DARK TRANQUILLITY, MOONSPELL, THE HAUNTED). Artwork for the effort was handled by Paul Romano (MASTODON, GODFLESH). The band has also partnered with PETA and plan to stay active within the animal liberation scene. Guitarist Scott Crouse told Revolver magazine about the new CD, "We aren't purposely trying to recapture the past, but I think we have harnessed some of the fire that set us apart from the pack early on. GOD FORBID:God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle appears along side his bandmates in the second issue of the gothic comic book series Eternal Descent, slated for publication this Fall. The issue features a storyline inspired by God Forbid's fourth studio album IV: Constitution of Treason and will be available at comic book stores worldwide, scheduled for release through Diamond Distribution during the 4th quarter of 2009. Llexi Leon, creator of the multi-media concept ETERNAL DESCENT, began approaching ESP artists late last year to create the Eternal Descent comic. The series is inspired by and features cameos from a host of iconic metal musicians. The initial launch issue is slated for late October, 2009 with the God Forbid issue released in November. The bands Atreyu, Firewind, and Static X, among others, are also slated for upcoming cameo appearances in subsequent issues. AXEMASTER/ INNER TERROR: (Band has changed their name, see below for details on the change) After several delays, the new Axemaster CD "The Inner Terror" is very close to completion. To give everyone a taste of what to expect from the disc, the band has chosen to release the song "Unresting Place" and feature it on as many internet sites as possible. The track will also be available for free download on all sites that allow it. For those of you who remember the old version of this song (with the previous singer) that was featured on the band's myspace page a couple years ago, you should know that this is a new and very improved version. Not only is the recording much better and features current vocalist Dan Kaisk, but the lyrics and vocal lines have been completely revised. The song has been enhanced in almost every way. AXEMASTER/ INNER TERROR: Axemaster is officially changing its name to INNER TERROR. Although the name Axemaster has a rich history that dates back to the middle 80's, the band decided that their new lineup, more modern sound, and greatly improved writing and performance created the need for a change and a fresh start. ATTACKHEAD: Hey all you metal maniacs it has been a while since my last update so here it is. First off, if you have Facebook or Twitter be sure to follow us or become a friend. We have two Facebook sites, one is a fan site under Attackhead and the other is my site under Mark Chapman. The Twitter site is under Attackhead. These sites are updated pretty much every day and you get up to the minute status changes of all the happenings. We have had a busy year. We had the opportunity to perform at several military bases and have more scheduled for next year. We partnered with the IAVA ( Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) and have been working with them to help out the Vets. We picked up an endorsement from Cocaine Energy Drink owned by Raymond Herrera of Fear Factory/Arkaea. Raymond has also been assisting us by hooking us up with some of his connections. We just filmed a 3 song video and interview with Flashrock TV out of Hollywood. You can see the video at attackhead.com in the videos section. We passed 20,000 friends on Myspace, and have been interviewed on numerous radio stations and web zines worldwide. Next year is going to be much of the same. We are working with Freedom to Rock which is a non-profit organization that is putting on tours of military bases. There is a possibility of a European tour with them in Sept, 2010. We have several shows planned for the Marines, Army and Navy both here and in other states. We will continue to work with our industry contacts and see what kind of deals we can work out. SAXON: U.K.'s Coolhead Productions is putting the finishing touches on a new documentary about the legendary British heavy metal band SAXON called "Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie". The film, which is expected to be released in November, celebrates the group's 30th anniversary. Produced by the makers of the critically acclaimed "Ian Gillan: Highway Star" (Universal, 2007), it not only has contributions from members of SAXON, past and present, but also from the likes of Lars Ulrich (METALLICA); Lemmy, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, Phil Campbell, Mikkey Dee (MOTÖRHEAD); Harvey Goldsmith, Danko Jones, Doro Pesch and many, many others. MORMON CRICKETS PROBLEM: Discover magazine reports that residents of Tuscarora, Nevada are using the music of LED ZEPPELIN and THE ROLLING STONES to ward off the mormon crickets' semi-annual invasion. Mormon crickets are a real problem in northern Nevada and other parts of the Great Basin: They march in columns up to two miles long and one mile wide from about May through August. They hatch in April and invade all aspects of life before they finally lay eggs and die. They destroy crops, invade people's homes and clog roadways — even requiring snowplows to clear out their piled-up carcasses. People do what they can to steer the pests away, trying poison bait and other tricks. But in 2006, after reading about a woman in the 1930s who had driven the insects off with a Chinese gong, a Tuscarora resident was inspired to try out some modern music. Since she knew the crickets rested at night, she got a group together to blast music for several days from early morning 'til evening. They tuned their stereos to a hard rock station, and local reports that year said that the music stopped many of the bugs in their tracks. (HeadbangerNYC)

VINNIE PAUL: Vinnie Paul will publish a paperback photo book/DVD on his late brother, PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, on November 18 via Vinnie's Big Vin label. FAUST: FAUST is the brainchild of singer/vocalist Aleister (Ancient, Abgott) who formed the band in 1992. After releasing a self-titled demo a year later, the band fell silent release-wise until 2001 when Aleister was commissioned as a live member of Ancient, and the aptly-titled first EP And Finally Faust was released independently. Aleister constructed an all-star lineup and in 2008 brought the newest and most high-profile FAUST to fruition onnew album From Glory To Infinity. EMPEROR: Norway’s EMPEROR have been added to the impressive list of artists set to be featured on Electronic Arts forthcoming Brutal Legend video game. The action-adventure game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 features Jack Black as the game’s lead character with additional game players featuring the voices of Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and actor/celebrity Tim Curry. Brutal Legend creative director Tim Schafer, used his own music experience as inspiration for the game. It is the second game from Schafer’s San Francisco-based Double Fine Productions, a company he launched in 2000 after leaving LucasArts. Electronic Arts’ web-based biography of the game notes it “features the character of Eddie Riggs, a roadie, who is accidentally transported to a fantasy world inspired by the artwork of heavy metal album covers. Eddie becomes the world’s savior leading the down-trodden humans against a range of supernatural overlords using a battle axe, his Flying V guitar infused with magical powers and a customizable hot rod.” The game follows the recent release of Live Inferno, a special series of recordings (2cd, dvd, deluxe box, limited 7-inch) captured during EMPEROR’s 2006/2007 reunion performances. 20 BUCK SPIN: 20 Buck Spin is proud to announce its next upcoming release.... the debut from Brooklyn transcendental black metal craftsmen Liturgy, entitled Renihilation. Brooklyn, NY’s Liturgy (not to be confused with a Chicago death metal band of the same name) deal in a style of indie black metal steeped in the genre’s most basic foundations of buzzing, dissonant guitars and whirlwind percussion, and yet they demonstrate an acute ability to make the sound firmly their own, both modern and ancient. Liturgy’s unique take on the genre only slightly recalls their NYC friends Krallice and the earlier works of the Norwegian wolves Ulver (particularly their 3rd LP masterwork Nattens Madrigal). In some sense Liturgy represents the seeping of black metal into the consciousness of the indie music world at large. The band claim influences ranging from cult black metal figures Vlad Tepes to Angelo Badalamenti to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, all of whom can be distantly identified in Liturgy’s approach. The album weaves intricate waves of dissonant dual guitar riffing and complex blackened harmonics between main songwriter Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and second guitarist Bernard Gann. The strange tonalities they seamlessly create providing layers of eerie dimension over which Hendrix’s tortured howls battle to be heard. The ultra-chaotic yet superbly minimalist drumming of Greg Fox (also of Dan Deacon and Teeth Mountain), utilizing only a kick, snare and crash symbols, adds a dose of old, raw punk/grind to the mix. Several intros and interludes consisting of vocal pieces and drones break the album up into distinct sections. Renihilation was recorded and mastered at the Thousands Caves Of Menegroth with Colin Marston of Krallice at the helm. The purposely low-res minimalist artwork recalls the work of German photographer Thomas Ruff in both aesthetic and intent. A photograph of a total eclipse, a massive celestial event, its aura being subdued and defeated by the void the low resolution of the image leaves in its wake – an apt analogy for Liturgy’s ecstatic sonic experiments. OVERMARS: Born Again - the Crucial Blast Records debut from France’s OVERMARS - will see US release September 22nd, 2009. Born Again descends deep into themes of self-immolation, horror, and rebirth, and becomes a harrowing narrative as it moves through a series of different musical moods. THE ATLAS MOTH: Candlelight Records today confirms the worldwide signing of Chicago’s The Atlas Moth. Popular throughout the Midwest region, the quintet joins the UK-based label’s growing American roster having already shared the stage with Pentagram, Saviours, Intronaut, Nachtmystium, Wolves in the Throne Room, Coalesce and many others. Recently completing tracking at Chicago’s Phase Recordings, the doom warriors expect to hit the road in the next month performing tracks from their forthcoming label debut. A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky, featuring artwork by Ryan Kasparian, is scheduled for American release on October 6. PANTHEON I Norwegian extreme metallers PANTHEON I have unveiled the new video for “Serpent Christ,” a track taken from the band's recently released full-length, Worlds I Create. “Serpent Christ,” which shows PANTHEON I performing amidst scenes of bondage and torture, was directed by Espen Krukhaug, who also worked on the band’s previous video “Where Angels Burn” and features Finland’s Peik Mattheiszen in the role of torturer. Reprising their role of victims in the video are models Maria Olsen and Helga Bårdsdatter Kristiansen who were recently seen in the band’s promo photos - the uncensored versions of which can only be found on the band’s website due to their explicit nature. SUBARACHNOID SPACE: SUBARACHNOID SPACE shall return with Eight Bells on September 22, 2009 via Crucial Blast. SUSPERIA: Norwegian five-piece SUSPERIA are currently working on a new video for the song "Character Flaw" with up and coming director/producer Daniel William Bones. Filming took place in Oslo last month and the footage is now being edited. The performance video will continue the apocalyptic theme featured in the artwork of the band's latest album Attitude, which was released via Candlelight Records in May. SUSPERIA's fifth studio album, Attitude was recorded in Norway and mixed at Studio Fredman in Sweden. It features guest appearances by Chuck Billy (Testament) and Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir). Band vocalist Athera made his return to the live arena in June at the Steinkjer Festival in Norway. The singer, who earlier this year suffered a heart attack which resulted in major open heart surgery, has made a rapid recovery and doctors gave him the go-ahead to make his comeback. TANKARD: Beer-soaked German thrash legends TANKARD recently released Thirst stateside to riotous applause. The album was produced again by band friend Andy Classen at his Stage One Studio. A video clip for "Stay Thirsty" appears on the limited edition of the record. Formed in 1982 in the boiler room of the Matthäus Church, Frankfurt/Main, TANKARD first took the stage in 1983. In 1984 they released the first demo and two years later cult record Zombie Attack (Noise). The self-proclaimed "most ugly band in Germany" would move on to a worldwide musical crusade to implement the German Purity Law of 1516. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are said to have commented on the band following a bar-hopping mission through Manhattan (and before deciding on an official name): "Hey, you guys sound like a mix of Tank and Discharge." Later, German language magazine Stern, in an article about the subculture of heavy metal wrote, "their music sounds like a train laden with beer tankards.... derailed!“ Whatever the case, and from whomever the quote, there's little doubt that TANKARD are indeed the founders of "Alcoholic Metal" and for that they are proud. Said Decibel magazine in a recent review of Thirst: "These Krauts love beer and fart jokes and zombies and they beat Municipal Waste to he whole 'part thrash' thing by a good 20 years AND they do it well..." RAM: Release Date: August 25, 2009; AFM is proud to announce the signing of Gothenburg, Sweden-based traditional heavy metal troupe RAM. SUBHUMANS: SUBHUMANS were at the forefront of the UK anarcho-punk scene in the early 80s, alongside such bands as Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, Rudimentary Peni and Conflict. From the start SUBHUMANS were praised for their ability to stretch the boundaries of punk rock with their unique blend of structured dynamic tunes and incisive sociopolitical lyrics. SUBHUMANS were, between 1980-85, one of the most prolific and original bands of the evolving UK punk scene; they were based in Warminster, Wiltshire, SW England, and the lineup was Dick on vocals, Bruce played guitar, Phil on bass, and Trotsky on the drums. Dick had previously sung for The Mental, who released one EP and embodied the "can't-play-will-play" early punk "anyone-can-do-it" attitude. Bruce had been in The Stupid Humans, also based in Warminster; these two met at an Angelic Upstarts gig in 1980, and when their bands split they got together to form SUBHUMANS. Musical influences were a mix of Sex Pistols, The Damned and similar punk originators, and pre-punk bands like King Crimson and Frank Zappa, which led to a style of punk more intricate in its structure than their contemporaries, without losing the base energy and dynamics of punk. Dick’s lyrics, at once socially aware and heavily critical of social norms, placed them in the anarcho-punk area of the ever-expanding UK punk scene of the early 80s, alongside Crass, Antisect, Conflict and Flux Of Pink Indians, who released the band’s first 3 EPs (Demolition War, Reason For Existence, and Religious Wars) and their first LP The Day The Country Died, which became an instant classic that went on to sell 100,000 copies (largely at the cover price of ‘pay no more than £3.25’, which was as cheap as possible in order to make the music more accessible). In ‘83 they formed their own label, Bluurg Records, and over the next two years released the From The Cradle To The Grave LP (which included a 16 minute track of the same name that had the music press calling for a redefinition of ‘punk’!) Evolution EP, Time Flies 12" EP, Rats EP, Worlds Apart LP, and 29:29 Split Vision LP, which was released after splitting up in ‘85. By then the band had played 262 gigs including several European tours and two in the USA, (which was in the 80’s a rare achievement for a non-commercially minded band). GORGOROTH: The ninth GORGOROTH album, Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt, is complete! The album was recorded in Tomas Asklund's Monolith Studio and features Infernus on guitars, Frank Watkins on bass, Pest on vocals and Tomas Asklund on drums. Since Infernus wrote all the music and because of all the rehearsals and pre-recording prior to the return of second guitarist Tormentor last year, it was decided that it would be more convenient for Infernus to record all guitars on the album. Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt was produced by Infernus and co-produced/engineered by Tomas Asklund. DUSTED ANGEL: Santa Cruz, California has given birth to an ungodly musical beast known as DUSTED ANGEL. Formed in 2008, the band features Clifford Dinsmore on vocals, Bill Torgerson on drums, Eric Feiber and Scott Stevens manning the guitars and Eliot Young on bass, DUSTED ANGEL'S members are longtime friends from the days when several of the members rolled together in hardcore henchmen BL'AST. Following that band, Clifford was a member of avant-prog-doomsters SPACEBOY, and also helped form the cerebrally crushing outfit GARGANTULA. Over the past half year since their inception, DUSTED ANGEL has transformed from somewhat of a side-project into a full-on act for the members. After playing out quite a bit locally and generating a massive response in the region in recent months, the band have also recently put a few tracks onto wax. U.S. CHRISTMAS: Although their name would invoke yuletide tidings and blissful chanting, U.S. CHRISTMAS creates music which is anything but. Spanning the dark, decrepit and painful side of disharmonic psychedelia, this North Carolina outfit has successfully distilled the essence of cacophony through countless layers of sound and crushing waves of volume that are an orchestrated assault on the senses. DELIAN: The much anticipated second album from Delain is finally here! Originally conceived by ex-Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt as an all-star studio project, the success of the debut album Lucidity tipped his hand and Delain evolved into a full blown active band. With Charlotte Wessels on vocals, Ronald Landa on guitar and grunt vocals, Sun Caged bassist Rob Vander Loo, and Sander Zoer on drums, Delain took Europe by storm. The band initially opened for many acts including sister band Within Temptation, and performed at numerous festivals. Ultimately they became a headliner in their own right. With that behind them they went into the studio to create their sophomore opus, April Rain. Martijn Westholt is clearly at the helm - the epic symphonic sounds that he brought to Within Temptation and Delain’s debut are obvious. The game was unveiled earlier this month at the illustrious E3 Expo — the Electronic Entertainment Expo — an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry. In Undead Knights, the player is the anti-hero, battling the wrath of fearless enemies to build the nastiest, most irreverent army possible. Your inherently foul-mouthed army and raging metal soundtrack helps you channel your inner anger. If you can deal with the gut-wrenching, smack-talking, fluid-spitting, and limb amputating ways of your battalion, you can embark on your journey of vengeance to defeat the king! MARDUK: The situation with MARDUK not having performed during the first week of Blackenedfest is due to vocalist Mortuus not having received his visa yet. Note, it is not a "denied" visa. The band filed for a P-1 non-immigrant work visa, which is required for a band to play in the states. The visa was approved by the United States Government's Homeland Security Office. Furthermore, as required, the band members each individually went to their Visa appointments at the US Embassy in Stockholm for the standard interview, at which point the persons handling the band's applications informed the band that there was no further action needed and that they should expect their passports in the mail with the P-1 visa attached. Everyone in the band received theirs except Mortuus. The day before tour, while the rest of the band were at the airport awaiting to board their flights to the US, Mortuus returned to the embassy to inquire as to the location of his passport. At this point, he was informed that he was missing one document in order to finalize the visa. No one in the band, nor the label, was made aware of this missing form. After we were made aware of this missing document, we provided the document to the Embassy in Stockholm and we are currently awaiting each day for the Passport to be returned to Mortuus with the visa stamp. CELAN: CELAN’s eagerly awaited debut album, Halo, will see a Sept. 1 US release via Exile On Mainstream Records. Featuring a who’s who of prominent experimental musicians including Unsane front man Chris Spencer, Einsturzende Neubauten/Redux’s keyboard player Ari Benjamin Meyers, flu.id’s Franz Xaver and Phil Roeder along with Oxbow guitarist Niko Wenner the quintet immediately sent tongues wagging and bloggers blogging when they posted a trio of tracks on their MySpace page (myspace.com/celanband) this winter. “I’ve always wanted to play in another band that’s different than Unsane,” explains Spencer. “Something more musically developed that is also able to exploit the raw noise from my neighborhood. IQ:With a 28-year history, IQ are widely regarded as one of the world’s most highly respected progressive rock bands. The group was formed in 1981 by guitarist Mike Holmes and keyboard player Martin Orford. They recruited bassist Tim Esau, later that year, followed by vocalist Peter Nicholls and drummer Paul Cook in 1982. The year 1982 saw the release of their first record Seven Stories Into Eight. Constant shows throughout the UK led to them becoming a regular fixture at London’s legendary Marquee Club. Their next album Tales from the Lush Attic was released in 1983, followed by the classic The Wake in 1985. Tensions within the band, plus a punishing live schedule, resulted in the departure of Peter Nicholls in 1985, at the end of a UK tour with Wishbone Ash. With new singer Paul Menel, the band headlined London’s Piccadilly Theater and secured a lucrative record deal with Phonogram. New studio albums Nomzamo (1987) and Are you Sitting Comfortably? (1989) were promoted by extensive European tours with Magnum and Mike and the Mechanics. The 1991 release of the live and rarities album J’ai Pollette d’Arnu” was a significant event as it was the first release on Giant Electric Pea, a new label founded by members and associates of IQ. 1991 also marked the return of original singer Peter Nicholls, as well as the arrival of John Jowitt as the band’s new bassist. With a stable line-up once more, IQ resumed live work in the UK, Europe, and North America while also writing new songs which would serve as the basis of the album Ever (1993). In 2005 Paul Cook left IQ after 23 years of service. He was replaced by Andy Edwards (ex-Robert Plant Band). Another line-up change followed in 2007 when Martin Orford left after 26 years to pursue a solo career. Mark Westworth (Darwin’s Radio) joined the line-up, and after a short tour in autumn of 2007, IQ set about completing work on their next studio album. 2009, sees the release of Frequency, IQ’s ninth studio album, a musical tour de force which finds the band still at the top of their game. The return of original drummer Paul Cook for this year’s live work ensures another exciting and memorable year for these popular and innovative prog rockers. DEVIN TOWNSEND:DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT To Release KI. In a world of increasing conformity and musical banality, Devin Townsend is among the few real personalities who have character, charisma and surprising innovative creativity. As a solo artist and producer, a member of the (by now disbanded) Strapping Young Lad, with whom he played Ozzfest and the main stage at the Download festival, and vocalist on Steve Vai’s album, Sex And Religion, – Townsend has always inspired fans and critics alike. The latest chapter of his extremely diverse career is entitled Ki and will be out in May/June 2009. “Ki is the first in a series of four albums under the moniker ‘Devin Townsend Project’. Each album is essentially a different band or collection of session musicians playing my music,” Townsend explains. “They were chosen based on what the theme of the album is and the vibe that the album is trying to project. The album Ki is very specific in this quartet of albums in that it controls its anger throughout, barring one song - ‘Heaven Send’ - and really is an exercise in having little to prove.” The most renowned project member on Ki is drummer Duris Maxwell (62), who has played with many acts, such as Heart, Jefferson Airplane, The Powder Blues, Tommy Chong and The Temptations. Maxwell even jammed with Hendrix. “I am very conscious of drummers and the energy they bring to the bands,” Townsend says. “I went to a blues club way up in the North of Canada and watched Duris. He has the vibe I wanted for the drums here: nothing to prove, but strong and a bit angry. Duris is an older cat but he’s heavy.” He is supported by bassist Jean Savoie. “Jean plays in a Beatles cover band and spent years playing the cruise ships all over the world. Name a style and he can jam it for hours. His technique is accomplished, and the fact that he had never played heavy music made him and Duris perfect for the project.” Dave Young is the keyboardist, and Townsend has been working with him for years: “He’s the most schooled musician out of all of us and can play any instrument. Keyboard players typically annoy the hell out of me, but Dave is more of an ambient musician and fills the spaces with fitting but unusual note choices simply by watching where I am on my fretboard.“ After an extremely difficult phase (“I quit many bad habits in my life after SYL ended. I felt depressed, angry and unhealthy and was not satisfied with living that way for the rest of my life. I quit all drugs, alcohol and a host of other addictions that were controlling me and my world”), Ki now sees him embark on an unmistakably new path. Although not overly aggressive, the album oozes a haunting intensity, a vitality which hides below a seemingly smooth surface. “Ki is a subtle, severe album, a challenge in some ways. The point to the music is that the whisper is louder than the roar in many ways. Ki is - on the surface - quiet and unassuming. Whenever it begins to lose its temper, it stops and doesn’t let go. It is avoiding that temptation, as that sort of anger is really gratifying but ultimately just leaves me unhappy. “In perfect unison with this thoroughly unusual, gripping and intelligent album, Townsend presents a three-dimensional cover artwork. As the music on Ki, the graphic design is also consciously multilayered. Townsend: “I live in the North of Canada and I believe that the native cultures of the world have it really down in terms of spirituality. Nature is ‘God’, in all its subtlety and terror. And we are all a part of it, whether or not we want to be. The mask on the cover is based on native North American and Chinese paintings. It is not authentic and is just meant to be two faces in one.” And what will the future bring? “When all four records in the DTP series are done and the ultimate box set is released at the end (eight records plus a DVD), I will play selected shows throughout the world. TANKARD:Beer-soaked German thrash legends TANKARD recently released Thirst stateside to riotous applause. The album was produced again by band friend Andy Classen at his Stage One Studio. A video clip for "Stay Thirsty" will appear on the limited edition of the record. Formed in 1982 in the boiler room of the Matthäus Church, Frankfurt/Main, TANKARD first took the stage in 1983. In 1984 they released the first demo and two years later cult record Zombie Attack (Noise). The self-proclaimed "most ugly band in Germany" would move on to a worldwide musical crusade to implement the German Purity Law of 1516. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are said to have commented on the band following a bar-hopping mission through Manhattan (and before deciding on an official name): "Hey, you guys sound like a mix of Tank and Discharge." EKTOMORF:Hungarian modern metallers EKTOMORF's latest studio album What Doesn't Kill Me... is the first EKTOMORF release on AFM Records. “This signing is a great new chapter in the band's career and we are very happy about it,” said founder/frontman Zoltán Farkas. EKTOMORF formed in 1993 in Mezökovacsházak, Hungary, a small city near the Romanian border, by Zoltán "Zoli" Farkas. Today, Zoli is the sole original member. In 2003, the band joined forces with Danish producer Tue Madsen who helped the band find its sound.
